Energy Transition

Innovation

Whessoe has a long history and is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of engineering technology.  From the “Derwent” locomotive in 1845 and the Sukkur barrage gates in 1928 to the world’s 1st LNG terminal

in 1963 and the world’s 1st rectangular modular LNG tank in 2009. Today, Whessoe continues to innovate and applies new technology to the energy transition and the hydrogen economy.

The Green Technology Race

The world is ever changing, greener fuels are the future, but there are so many competing technologies, which one will prove to be the best – the greenest/most efficient/lowest cost? However, the answer is likely to contain Hydrogen in one form or another potentially as green hydrogen gas, green ammonia, liquified hydrogen, or synthesised LNG from green hydrogen. Whessoe have taken a pro-active approach to this energy conundrum and in October 2023 Whessoe received DNV certification relating to our detail design for a 40,000m3 liquid hydrogen sphere.

The Energy Transition

As the world looks to move to more sustainable energy, Whessoe is not only applying its expertise to liquid hydrogen but also to providing design consultancy and engineering to allow for optimised solutions across the whole hydrogen and clean energy chain.  Whether that is engineering design studies for large scale energy transport such as clean ammonia from the Middle East to Europe, smaller scale projects to find the optimal design for hydrogen storage (gas or liquid) or the best energy recovery and buffering designs integrated between each link in the whole hydrogen and clean energy chain.  Whessoe can provide both bespoke and proven solutions, whether large or small scale.

From early engineering design studies for large scale energy transport (clean ammonia from the Middle East), the optimal design for hydrogen storage (gas or liquid) to efficient energy integration and recovery, Whessoe can assist.  This is supplemented with our understanding and experience of ammonia terminals which Whessoe have been designing for over 50 years, therefore, Whessoe is uniquely placed to offer engineering expertise throughout the hydrogen economy.

Clean Storage Solutions

Whessoe clean technologies include designs for the following products, all required for a more sustainable future:

Process Design Services

In addition to the storage aspect Whessoe also offers balance of plant design solutions for Pre-Feasibility, Feasibility and FEED studies, covering all disciplines. Utilising Whessoe as the balance of plant designer alongside a storage tank design reduces interfaces and improves project efficiency.
